Professional Dry Cleaners

At Gills Dry Cleaners we would like to share stories, tips and some little ideas you may be able to use to make your life of laundry around the house a little bit easier. It’s not the most exciting of topics in everybody’s daily routine but we might able to share some wisdom and give you a few pointers on what ourselves and other people around the world are doing to make the laundry less of a chore.

Summer Time & Offer

Summer Time & Offer

We are great at talking about the weather at every opportunity we get. Also at this time of year the annual debate about when summer actually starts, comes up. Sometimes it can be very funny to see your friends who are normally very rational people, passionately disagree with each other on Irish weather. So we decided we would help and finally solve our friends dilemma and come up with a solution.

We figured both our friends are right. For those of you that get to the end of our article, we have a special offer for you.

May has finally arrived and so too has Summer. Our summer months are May, June and July and right in the middle of that we have mid-summers day but that refers to the Astrological summer. Our official Metrological summer depends on our weather and those months are June, July and August. So the next time someone is having a debate with you about summertime you can ask them is that Astrological or Metrological summer you are talking about. I’m sure you will get a very puzzling look. It sounds very technical but that’s the official line from the Met office. Our seasons in a weather sense are typically delayed by one month throughout the year. So our friends are both right. Summer starts in May and June.

To kick summer off, we have a Three for Two offer on all our Dry Cleaning Services until the 19th of May. Get three items Dry Cleaned and get the cheapest item cleaned for free. There are a few terms and conditions but nothing silly. Check in our stores for details. Westport, Ballina, Castlebar and Dunshaughlin. (No we are afraid getting three weddings dresses cleaned at the same time are not included in this offer.) Just mention the code “MAY MADNESS” to avail of the deal. You must mention the deal at the time you leave your items in.

Makeup And Tan Removal

Makeup And Tan Removal

This one is for the ladies (and guys). April is here and so too is the Sun. Well, April is here anyway…….the Sun maybe slightly delayed! You can start to see the summer clothes appearing with bright colours and light materials. You can also see the complexion that only the Celts seem to possess that winter look of milk bottle white legs and arms. That’s why Ireland is one of the best consumers of tan products and makeup.

There is such a vast array of tan products alone it is hard to discern which ones to choose. The task of applying makeup and tan products is an art form, so too, unfortunately, is the art of removing the stains that tan and makeup products leave behind. It doesn’t matter if the products are water or oil based or if the pigments are synthetic or organic, makeup stains are very hard to remove.

Obviously, with a tan product, it is recommended that the product is applied at least a day before an occasion but then comes the dreaded night time routine for the bed. How many times have you woke to find your sheets have a better tan application than you have. There are solutions, don’t ever use white sheets or you’ll regret it. You can use bed liners specifically made for after-tan application. But that doesn’t take care of everything.

There are times when that waterproof mascara seems to be only waterproof when it gets on your clothes and that new foundation just doesn’t compliment your shirt or blouse collar as much as your face. We have heard it so often from clients that washing and rewashing will not work. That’s why they come to us. There are many tips for everything regards laundry but when it comes to makeup removal, save yourself time and stress and leave it to us. It really is the simplest

Easter Fun

Easter Fun

As soon as the time changes it feels that spring has really arrived but this year Easter is only a week after the time changes. The next time Easter arrives this early is 2024 when it falls on March 31st.

For those that have kids in their lives be it sons, daughters, nephews, nieces or grandchildren, it’s a busy time. Schools are off and outdoor activities are on the cards. Even though the grass is still wet it doesn’t stop young kids from slipping sliding and having a good time while they can. The Easter egg hunt is very popular and it is genuinely great fun to see kids search every nook and cranny for that last egg ( the one that you cruelly keep in your pocket just in case they find every egg too quickly!!).

However, what is not good fun is trying to clean those grass marks of clothes. Of course, the worse marks always seem to be on the clothes that are brand new or the special clothes you have been saving for Easter. It’s like they know what will drive you mad. Maybe it’s payback for hiding all those eggs so cleverly!

Grass stains will come out but you need to be fairly quick and try and prevent the stain from drying in too much. Soaking the stain in a solution of water and detergent is great but remember to check the care label and don’t use cleaners that could bleach or discolour garment especially if your only treating a small area. Wash the clothes as usual, but be careful don’t put the clothes in the dryer until you’ve checked the stain has gone completely. The alternative, of course, is to give them to us and let us do all the work for you.

Quilted Jackets

Spring is in the air and the days are noticeably getting longer. It’s a lovely time of year and the added stretch in the evening makes it a little easier to go for those walks that we all promised ourselves we would be doing in January. The blast of snow last week and earlier on in March reminds us that we really cant put away those padded jackets just yet. While most of us were shifting from foot to foot trying to keep warm while watching the parades over the weekend some were fortunate enough to have witnessed Irelands Grand Slam win in rugby at Twickenham.

Those quilted jackets and padded coats are the only things that make it possible to keep us going until (ahem) “the balmy nights of June” that we have in Ireland. Seriously though, it’s really worth keeping those quilted coats in good shape and making sure they are well looked after. We know they come in all shapes and sizes but they also come with different fillings. Really good quality quilted wear may have “Down and Feather” fillings but synthetic material can also be really good and nearly all the best brands have both.

It’s always a good idea that if you’re purchasing a new coat or jacket to make sure it is well quilted. Make sure you have vertical as well as horizontal quilt lines so that the filling material doesn’t all go to one area. It’s also best if those quilted areas are not too big so the material won’t shift. Make sure the jacket is well constructed and get it cleaned at least once a year. Most domestic washing machines and dryers won’t wash and dry quilted wear correctly and air drying won’t dry quilted fillings completely. Always read the care label and don’t forget we have professional equipment to look after quilted materials. Taking good care of your quilted garments can extend their life for years.

Laundry Symbol Meaning

Laundry Symbol Meaning

We have all done it at some stage and just thrown the jeans, shirt or jumper into the washing machine or dryer without looking at the care label or checking pockets. Sometimes we are left scratching our heads to find what went into the machine isn’t the same as what came out. Never mind the paper tissues that was hiding at the bottom of some pocket, causing your laundry to have a white snowy effect like a newly pebble-dashed wall! The big problem is when your expensive cashmere jumper now just about fits a Barbie Doll or the pair of jeans you thought were colourfast now has coloured everything else a lovely shade of Indigo.

It pays to read the label but sometimes you’d be excused for thinking you need a degree in Egyptian hieroglyphics to translate those symbols into something that is easier to understand. Today we have the solution. We have a little cheat sheet for you to print out. Just stick the cheat sheet on the wall in the laundry room. The people at Textile Industry Affairs have created a one-page solution that will mean you will always have the answer to those symbols and know exactly what to do. Don’t forget we can alleviate the burden for you too. Just drop your laundry into any our shops. Otherwise here is the link.

Ironing Done Right

Ironing Done Right

Its one of those jobs that you either love or hate. Some people look at ironing as therapy and can easily get lost in the rhythm as they effortlessly complete the basketful of laundry. Others really find it a chore and sometimes will do anything to avoid it. Putting it on the long finger will only work for a while before it gradually turns into that inevitable task that you have to tackle. Everybody has tried at some stage to iron their jeans and tees. Many would have seen their Mam or Dad when they were younger, pressing each item, steam rising from an old cloth to make it easier and the noise of the cable going back and forth as it hit off the ironing board in  a back and over rhythm. Some take great pride in their work and you know the really good ones who like ironing when the creases are so perfect along shirt sleeves or a pair of trousers. There definitely is an art in doing it perfectly. For those that don’t fancy the task or just want a break, you can always use the skill of a professional laundry service like Gills Dry Cleaners.

Just so as you can see the care and dedication some people take have a look at this video on how to iron a shirt perfectly.
